Invest in people before its too late

Today, in our current financial crisis, I often see leaders push their employees (and themselves) to deliver more and faster! And I don’t mean just a little bit more, but to the point where employees almost break down under it! … and some do!

Some leaders set aside and ignore a whole list of initiatives that usually would have been installed to motivate employees, themselves and others. This could be leadership development, professional training, off-sites, or days where you invest in innovation or in the community. It could even be little things like a free cup of coffee or fresh fruit! They set aside all signals, which could say: “We actually care about your well being as well as our business”.

Often, the argument used is that “when things get better…” , i.e. when the crisis is over, ” … we can all go back to normal“.

Have you heard some variation of that argument before?

As good as it gets!

I do realize, of course, that many companies simply need to make adjustments due to their financial situation. But, what if the current situation is the new “normal“? Imagine if things just don’t get better, but stay the same for a long time? What if this is as good as it gets?

I wonder if you would communicate differently? Would you lead others in a different way? Would you invest more in people?…

And while we are at it, let’s consider that other option: Even if times WILL improve, the economy WILL pick up again and things do get better, – do you honestly believe that there will be less pressure on productivity, a decreased demand to deliver? Probably not! Much more likely, the pressure will remain or become even higher, when and if things start to pick up again.

If there ever was a time and a NEED to invest in your people, and to simply show that you actually are interested in their motivation and well being, then it is NOW!

They need it now, more than ever!

Nogle gange vil vi som ledere løbe og kæmpe videre i en evighed, selvom benene er trætte og selvom det ikke er det mest rationelle eller effektive at gøre. Ofte er det faktisk mere gavnligt at give en plads til restitution, både fysisk og mentalt, så vi kan angribe vores rolle med størt muligt overskud, energi og kreativitet.
